'Meal deal', ceramic, 2016
I eat a lot of meal deals. I love and hate them. They are great value for money, easy and available everywhere, but despite the convenience something about the meal deal troubles me. Maybe its just my conscience nagging when I think about the sheer scale of production, food waste, and the throw away nature of it all. To me the meal deal represents everything wrong with supermarket economics. The scale and consistency of packaged sandwich's seem to exist infinitely.
It also got me thinking about packaging, and traditional ceramic vessels and the relationship we now have with food containers. No longer do we use tree bark food platters or earthy terracotta pots for storing and trading food. The modern vessel is made to be unwrapped and discarded after use.
